Sister Theresa Jungers

Sister Theresa (Rita Ann) Jungers, OSF, died Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at the age of 85.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Clare House Chapel, Mount St. Francis Center at 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 22, 2024. Masks are optional. Guests unable to attend may participate via livestream at: www.youtube.com/dubuquefranciscans Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Theresa, daughter of the late Petronella (Stapenhorst) and William Jungers, was born July 10, 1938 in Hospers, IA. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Anthony Church, Hospers. On September 3, 1960 she entered the Sisters of St. Francis in Dubuque and was received with the name Sister Rita Ann on August 10, 1961. Sister Theresa made her final profession of vows on August 12, 1968.

Sister received her master’s degree in reading from Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa. She ministered as a teacher in Illinois at North Riverside and Niles. Other missions included Sheldon, Iowa, Mount St. Francis Center, Dubuque, Iowa, and St. Louis, Missouri.

Sister is survived by her sister, Ellen Vortherms; her brothers Arnold ‘Arnie’ (Roberta ‘Bobbi’) Jungers and Daniel (Phyllis) Jungers; a sister-in-law Marlene Jungers; nieces, nephews, and her Franciscan sisters.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Sister Margaret Jungers, OSF; brother, Bernie Jungers, and brother-in-law Sylvester Vortherms.
